Strengths identified during reassessment:
A strategic approach has continued to drive forward the development of TA practice at St Peter’s CE Primary School in order to promote high quality teaching and learning throughout the school. This strategic approach is very evident through the BPTAA being part of the School Improving Outcomes Plan 2022-23. There is an experienced LPPA Lead with clear structure of roles within the TA team and the BPTAA has been used as part of the school’s reflective practice.

A particular strength of the school is the value placed on the role of TAs at St Peters. The head teacher and governors recognise that there is a high level of staffing of which, ‘TAs are are a vital component’ (headteacher).

Professional and personal development offered through the school is valued by TAs and there are regular TA meetings for sharing information and professional development. During the reassessment visit TAs talked of progression in their roles and one parent was benefitting from a student TA placement, valuing support provided by experienced TAs.
There are strong induction and performance management process for TAs valued by the TAs and embedded in practice.

The skills and interests of TAs are very much recognised, developed and utilised throughout the school with ownership regarding their own role and responsibilities. TAs have different roles depending on the needs of the pupils and their own expertise and ‘They are not allocated a place, but allocated a role’ (head).
The school continues to recognise the importance of effective communication between teachers and TAs and this was highlighted during the Covid pandemic. New communications using WhatsApp are now embedded along with bulletins being sent to the whole staff, ‘The staff bulletin reinforces the positives of school practice’ (TA).

St Peters has proved to be a listening school. For example, their views are listened to and recorded during induction and appraisal, with changes made. Whilst performance management targets are linked to school priorities, they are also linked to development requested by the TAs themselves. On a day to day basis the BPTAA coordinator is accessible, ensuring value is place on TA voice. ‘Teachers listen to us and value our approach and opinions’ (TA). ‘I could go to anyone and ask anything and they would be there to support me’ (TA).

Whilst the learning and progress of all children is recognised as the overall responsibility of the teacher, the TAs continue to be an integral part of driving teaching and learning throughout the school. Consistency between TAs and teachers is promoted, for example through TAs having training linked to teachers’ trainings, ‘It is good to have support as part of a team’ (TA).
There is a range of interventions with trained TAs at the forefront of delivery, for example in literacy, behaviour and individual support based on specific needs.

The pupils very much value that TAs are there when they need them both for learning and pastoral support for example, Pupils said ‘TAs can be strict when they want to be, but they can be fun as well’ and ‘If you are stuck on something they won’t give you the answer but will help you’. They summed up by saying, ‘School wouldn’t be school without TAs.’
